Oedo-Koh Peony Tree Incense

The peony tree folklore is rich with legends and symbols that have shaped its cultural significance.  In Greek mythology, the peony is associated with Paeon, the physician of the Gods, who transformed into the flower to save his life after healing Pluto.  

In Japanese culture the peony is revered as "Queen of the Flowers," symbolising imperial wealth, feminine beauty, honour and a happy marriage.

Oedo-Koh Peony Tree Incense by Nippon Kodo is designed to celebrate the art, craft and culture of old Edo (the city now known as Tokyo).  The Peony Tree (Hanamachi botan) was popular in old Edo, amongst the teahouses in the geisha quarter.  

The flower is deeply embedded in good luch traditions, particularly for the Lunar New Year and weddings.

Peony fairies are said to inhabit the blossoms, blessing respectful gardners.

The scent of this incense is deeply floral, yet very delicate and enchanting The burn time of the sticks is quite low and no matter how the package may look in the picture here, it comforably fits in the palm of my hand.  The incense also comes with a holder, which is made of tin.  This would be an ideal gift for the connoisseur of fine incenses.
